Are there any publishing companies that will publish a book and get their profits after it sells?

I sent my book to a publisher and they said it was great and they wanted to publish it but I had to pay them 6000-10000 dollars over a two year period in order for them to promote my book. In addition they needed 500. up front to get started. Is this normal. Are there any publishing companies that will publish a book and get their profits after it sells?
You sent your book to a VANITY PRESS, which is NOT a commercial publisher. NOT normal!

RUN AWAY. It sounds like a specific one I know about and he is being investigated by the Florida attorney general.

Here's how real publishing works: you write a book, send it in, if they like it, THEY-PAY-YOU for it.

That's pro publishing. Vanity houses *want* you to think pay- to-publish is how it works. It's how they make money.

Obey YOG'S LAW: "Money flows TOWARD the writer."

This means NEVER pay to get published or to enter contests or pay a fee-charging agent. NEVER. Obey Yog's Law and you won't get ripped off.

To find a publisher:

Go to a bookstore. Find books like yours. Look inside the front pages to get the publishers' websites. Follow their submission guidelines to the letter.

To find an agent:

Look up websites of writers with work similar to your own. See if they mention who reps for them. A short polite mail asking if they can recommend an agent is not out of place. Do not tell them about your book, that's seen as poor manners.

Go to the 808 section of your library which has all the books on writing. They will help you steer clear of the rips.

Writer's Market 2010 will be in the reference section. It lists all the commercial publishers and what they're looking for.

This site is a SAFE writer's board run by pros. It is free and they can help you stay clear of the sharks in the publishing pool.

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/

You don't start shopping your book around until you've gotten solid feedback on it first. AW has a Share Your Work forum where other writers can give constructive crits.

Feedback, beta readers, polished, and re-polished, a book has to be the best you can make it before you send it out. I thought my first was ready, but two years of rejections and rewrites taught me better.

(It did sell, I landed a multi-book contract.)

But you can't be in a hurry, or assume you'll get paid a fortune. The Brenda Hiatt link below will give you a general idea about book advances. Always assume you will get the lowest number. You'll be the newbie on the block. It takes time to work up to getting the real money.

STAY AWAY FROM PUBLISHAMERICA. They are the BIGGEST ripoff site of them all. They say they're free and don't want your money, but that is a LIE. You end up buying overpriced copies of your own book!

They will not put your book into a store--but lie and say that you are supposed to do that. Most writers submit their book, and whether it is good or horrible, it's quickly "accepted," (they take everything!) and then you never hear from the poor writer again. Your rights are tied up for seven years!

Just google "publish America" + "scam" and find all the writers who got ripped off by them. They are what is called a "print mill." you don't want anything to do with them. They ruin lives and careers.

If any publisher or agent advertises on Google, it will only lead to a scammer or a vanity house. A real publisher or agent doesn't advertise!

Get Strunk and White's ELEMENTS OF STYLE. All writers have that book and use it.

Again--the 808 books at the library will help you on all this!

And just because you've finished a book doesn't mean it's commercially viable. Pro writers finish a book and start writing another. It keeps your head from exploding while you're waiting to hear back from agents and editors!

See you on Absolute Write! ;%26gt;)Are there any publishing companies that will publish a book and get their profits after it sells?
This is not normal. This is a vanity or subsidy publisher. If it were an actual commercial publisher, they would pay you when you sign a contract. It's called an advance. If you want to find a list of real publishers and agents to send your manuscript to, go to your library and look at the latest edition of Writer's Digest. Are there any publishing companies that will publish a book and get their profits after it sells?
Nope! NEVER PAY A PUBLISHER!! Publishers are not supposed to ask for money before publishing someone's book. Don't return their calls. Send it to some other editor. Remember the above mentioned golden rule in the publishing business, the money ALWAYS flows towards the writer, never the other way around.

A good website to help you:

Good luck!
This is a scam don't do it! Real publishing companies do get their profits after the book sells.

If you don't mind putting up money, just self-publish through a site like lulu.com.

How does a person get a job singing for music publishing companies?

I'm talking about practice CD's and sample tracks for choirs, musical productions, theater music, etc. How does one go about getting a job doing that kind of singing? I'd LOVE to do that for a living. How does a person get a job singing for music publishing companies?
Like many other questions to do with the music industry (or anything to do with the arts, for that matter), this has fairly simple steps to explain, but rather hard to actually put into practice.

Get rep, get contacts. In this case, get to know people in the industry - as people - and join choirs, musical productions, et al. to get experience. Backstage crew or minor singers in the big ones if there's any vacancies, get the directors/conductors to know you a little bit through hard work and loyalty. When the directors/conductors know you well enough (whether it's a big-name director/conductor or not), ask for their references to show to a -small- music publishing company, and then work with them. Small music publishing companies will give you enough experience to go with one of the bigger ones.

But it's hard work, like anything else - unless you get a massive stroke of genius and submit an amazing piece of work - an incredible song track or something. Or if you get a bunch of people together, get them good, and have your very own sample choir/theatre music etc etc. (If theater, the community theatre can be a good place to start.)How does a person get a job singing for music publishing companies?

  • How do you get books to review for free from publishing companies?

I was watching youtube videos and some of them were talking about how they get books "for review" each week from publishers. They say that they get books to review and they get to keep them. I was wondering how you become one of these reviewers? How do you get books to review for free from publishing companies?
Usually these are blogs with a lot of followers, mainly book bloggers. YOu can check out some publisher websites to see if they're looking for bloggers to review their books. A few months ago, Tor was, so you might want to check to see if that offer still stands.

Any Publishing Companies read this thing?

I have a question. I have a collection of poems and little things like that that i have written I am assembling and will be finished soon. Are there any publishing companies out there interested in reading it, or how would i get noticed by a publishing company?Any Publishing Companies read this thing?
You can either self-publish (that is a LOT of research and man-hours) or you need a literary agent. Publishing companies will not touch unsolicited manuscripts - they don't even read them, they go straight into the garbage. A reputable agent will either agree to a fee from your royalties when said agent successfully sells your material, or ask for a reasonable fee up front. Be aware of "vanity publishers." Here's a link with what to avoid:

http://www.sfwa.org/beware/vanitypublish鈥?/a>Any Publishing Companies read this thing?
I recommend a literary agent - as many of the larger companies will not read your work without one.

For smaller companies I would recommend , sending off samples of your work to them, entering into competitions - festivals are a good way to get your work noticed. I also suggest going to open mic nights for poetry etc.Any Publishing Companies read this thing?
Mmmm, hard to do. Try to invent a way to sell it, a thing that you can do to get yourself in the spotlight; a niche. Most publishers aren't going for poetry and wouldn't look at it seriously.

The publisher has to invest thousands of dollars for the production of a book. They want to know that the book is sold before it's even gone to press. If you can find some way to raise yourself in notoriety and can then shop the book around to people who will buy cases of it, you've got a deal.

    Good luck.

Are there any book publishing companies in Devon?

I've written a book and i'm living in Devon...i'm trying to find a publishing companie to publish my book. Any suggestions? Are there any book publishing companies in Devon?
I don't know of any, but you shouldn't restrict yourself to local companies. Getting published is hard enough as it is, without imposing any further constraints on the process. Most if not all of the business between author and publisher can be done by some combination of post, telephone and email.

  • What are some self publishing companies who help market your book?

if you are a published author who self published what company did you use and how was your experience? What are some self publishing companies who help market your book?
If you are self-publishing, you are the publisher and responsible for your own marketing. Even if you are traditionally published you would still be responsible for your own marketing.

To find the right company to self-publish with, you need to look at several factors.

    1. What type of book are you publishing? (i.e. novel, children's book, etc.) There are some companies that are better than others. If your book is one that needs to be printed in color, you'll want a POD company that can provide a better price and a book size that qualifies for distribution. For example, it is less expensive to print in color via Createspace vs. Lulu. If you're printing on black and white, most PODs are competitive.

    2. Distribution. This is a key factor in the publishing process, making sure that you have options for distribution to Amazon, Barnes %26amp; Noble, as well as eBook channels such as Kindle, Nook, Mobi, etc. When you go print-on-demand, by having an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) for your book (the little bar code on the back of the book) that will get you into virtually all bookstore databases and your book will be carried in online stores. It will also be available if you walk into a Barnes %26amp; Noble or Indie bookstore, if you give them your ISBN, they will be able to order the book.

    3. Does the self-publishing outlet provide a book return policy? This is an extremely important question to ask. If you are going to try to get your book placed in the bookstores, you will need to be able to offer a return policy, as bookstores require that. If the books are not purchased, they will return them at the end of the year. This is an industry standard and brick and mortar stores will not buy without this option. Lulu and Createspace do not offer this option. Infinity Publishing does offer this option for authors, at no additional charge. There are other POD companies that offer it, but you have to pay $1K and up for this service.

    4. How much help are you looking for throughout the publishing process? There is a lot that goes into publishing a book, editing, formatting, cover design, distribution, ePub conversion, bookstore pitching, marketing plan, and more. I do recommend that you use a publishing consultant to help you find the right publishing option and resources for you.

Do your research and find the right fit for your title. Infinity Publishing and Xlibris, both offer free consultations so you may want to give them a call. They will ultimately have someone assigned to work along with you throughout the process.

Best of luck to you! What are some self publishing companies who help market your book?

From what I remember it's pretty much up to you. But with the internet now it probably changed. Published writing is a buisiness.

Go here and ask the same question. www.writersdigest.com There are people who know what they're talking about.
