I'm a teenager and I'm writing a realistic-fiction book that I would like to get published.
I don't think I can get an agent at this time, so I'm going to try to get me book published without one first.
Can you give me a list of good book publishing companies? Can you give me a list of book publishing companies?
A good starting place is "Writer's Market", which is an annual publication listing agents and publishers. You can order it from Amazon, or find it at Barnes and Noble. This will help you decide who would be most interested in your genre. By all means, try to get an agent first.
Why don't you think you can get an agent? It costs nothing and it makes no difference that you're a teenager. The only thing stopping any writer from getting an agent is if their writing isn't good enough for the agent to want to represent them - in which case, that writer isn't going to get a publishing deal either.
There are hundreds of publishers and many better ways to do your research than asking strangers on Yahoo Answers. For a start, all the books you see in bookstores will have been published by legitimate publishing companies, whose names will be clearly marked on the book and whose details will be in the front of the book somewhere. For more detailed research (which you will need to do, as you seem a little confused about the publishing process already) get a copy of Writers' Market in the US or Writers' %26amp; Artists' Yearbook in the UK. You can either buy a copy or borrow it from the library. It lists publishers and agents as well as giving other industry advice.
By the way, any publisher that asks you for money upfront is a self-publishing/vanity-publishing company - that includes Author House. Do not use them. A legitimate publisher pays YOU, not the other way around. Ditto agents. They don't charge money upfront, either. Their only fee is a percentage of any deal they negotiate for you.
However, before you do any of these things, finish your book. Worrying about it now is totally premature. Can you give me a list of book publishing companies?

I suggest you don't waste your time and get a literary agent. First of all, most publishing houses won't even glance at your manuscript if it is unsolicited. Literary agents know what they are doing. They can tell scam from verified. They can get the best deal for your book. Even if you DO manage to somehow submit your story to a Publishing House, it would most likely stay in the "slush pile" with hundreds of other unsolicited manuscripts.
Here are some publishing companies off the top of my head:
Little Brown and Co
Harper Teen
Penguin
Simon Pulse
Puffin
Author House is a very good and reliable one, they published me. :)

Take a look at pred-ed.com. It's the site for Preitors and Ediors; they list and rate publishers and agents.
