Australian Publishing companies: Does it need to be in the same state?

I live in Victoria and wants to publish a fiction book. But there aren't many publishing companies in Victoria that is willing to publish fiction. So I am asking, would it matter if the manuscript is in a different state?

Example, would it be possible if a Victorian writer sends her manuscript to a NSW publishing company?Australian Publishing companies: Does it need to be in the same state?
No, you don't need to be in the same state. The Australian publishing industry is really small compared to places like the US, and it would be kind of restrictive if authors couldn't submit outside their state!

I assume you're talking about mainstream publishing, not vanity publishing (vanity publishing is where you pay money and they print whatever the heck you write, whether it's good or bad or totally crazy). You have to carefully research the publishers and their submission guidelines, and stick to those guidelines. Penguin Australia, for instance, are currently accepting unsolicited (ie: they didn't ask you to send them) manuscripts for their children's and young adults division. Many other publishers will not. Most will only accept manuscripts submitted by a literary agent.

This means that first you will have to query literary agents (again, carefully research their submission guidelines and follow them to the letter). You can query agents in another state, or even in another country. There aren't many Australian agents and a lot of them do not accept unsolicited manuscripts either (frustrating, right?).

It's not uncommon not to meet your agent/publisher face to face, and business is conducted over the phone and through email. Whatever you do, don't try and show up at a publishing house waving your manuscript, as people have suggested in the past. You will only get laughed at.

Do some research on publishing and querying agents first. Try Miss Snark and work from there : http://misssnark.blogspot.com/Australian Publishing companies: Does it need to be in the same state?
You can absolutely send your manuscript to any publisher in Australia, so long as they are willing to accept unsolicited manuscripts. Get hold of a copy of "The Australian Writers Marketplace" for a full list of publishers or agents who may be interested in your work and their contact details and guidelines. This book is available in many public libraries. Visit the company website to see if they are currently accepting unsolicited manuscripts, or consider sending them a letter or email to ask if your work is of interested to them.Australian Publishing companies: Does it need to be in the same state?
Honestly, I'd say no, it doesn't need to be in the same state.

I live in Victoria too and I never realized that there weren't many publishing companies here. :\

I've heard of like, people getting their book published internationally.

But the publisher may wish to have like a meeting with you, so you have to be prepared to travel.

Also, the chances of getting a novel published if you go to the publishing place with the manuscript in hand and say "Will you publish this?" is a LOT higher than sending an email. It's easy to say no to a few pixels, not as easy to say no to a person.

Oh, and what's the name of your book? I'd totally be interested in reading it. :D
It doesn't have to be in the same state or even in the same country.
