Literary Marketplace is the book to start with. I think you almost need an agent at this point. But there are ways to distribute electronic editions. Maybe set up a web page.
For now, try to get something published in a magazine. It might help you if you decide to get an agent.
who don't do you just do it yourself completely? don't lose control? don't sell out? Start your own company, find your own printer and do it!Publishing Companies?
You are right about Publish America. But most self publishing companies aren't any better. Get a copy of Writers Market 2008 and read it. Learn how traditional publishing works. And remember - before you send anything to anyone - Google the heck out of them. Check them out with Preditors and Editors, Absolute Write Water Cooler's Bewares and Background Checks and any other writer beware sites you can find.
Also if you go to my profile, you will see I star all Q and A on publishing and writing for novices to use. Feel free to print out any that will help you and study them. Pax-C
Are you planning on self-publishing or trying to get a publisher? The Writer's Market is a good book to get to help you find pubilshers. You can also decide to self-publish, depending on what the book is - nonfiction is better than fiction for self-publishing. Self-publishing is NOT NOT the same as "vanity publishing." Stay away from companies where you have to pay to publish your book. Many people self-publish today and also do print on demand books. When you self-publish, you work with a distributor who will sell your book to the stores. Remember that a bookstore is not the be-all and the end-all, especially today with amazon.com.
To be read by the better publishers, you will probably need an agent. Or perhaps you have a contact in a publishing house that can help get your book to the right place.Publishing Companies?
