I'm a little more than half way through with writing my first novel, and I want to seriously look into getting it published and hopefully put into stores. What are some good publishing companies that I can work with who are great at what they do without being too pricey to work with? What are some good inexpensive publishing companies for unknown authors?
Publishing companies should NEVER ask for money to publish your book - in fact, they should be offering YOU an advance! There are scams out there that claim they will publish your book for a price, but in reality they will take your money and your novel will never see the light of day. I'd definitely advise going through an agent to get published. Yes, they take a cut of your royalties, but they offer a wealth of inside knowledge and experience that can be invaluable to a first-time author. There are a lot of books out there on getting published, I would recommend 'How To Get Published' by Susan Page, but there are a lot of alternatives and internet sites that can offer advice. Do your research before applying to an agent - try looking up who represented some of your favourite authors who write the same genre as you. And remember, everyone faces rejection, so don't give up if it doesn't work out the first, fourth, or twentieth time.
Hope this helps, and good luck! What are some good inexpensive publishing companies for unknown authors?
OK, you're confused.
The only publishing companies that cost anything at all are self-publishing or vanity-publishing companies. They are companies who you pay to print copies of your book. They will print anything, no matter how bad, provided they are paid. But if you use them to publish your book, your book will NOT be sold in stores. Stores don't carry self-published books. If you go into a Barnes %26amp; Noble or a Borders, and look around you, *not one* of the books you see on the shelves is a self-published book. Same with libraries.
Legitimate publishing companies - ie, the ones who publish pretty much every novel you've ever read - don't charge you any money to publish your book. In fact, they pay *you*, in the form of a percentage of the cover price of each copy sold. They also arrange all the design, marketing, publicity, proofreading, editing, distribution and everything else. Books published by them will be sold in bookstores and carried in libraries. However, they are selective in what they publish. They pick and choose what to publish, and will only publish a book they consider to be good enough. What are some good inexpensive publishing companies for unknown authors?
Okay. There are two kinds of publishers. The traditional publishers and the self-publishers, sometimes called vanity press. The traditional publishers look at your work, decide it might be a good seller, and sign you to a contract. Then they work with you to get the book to the point where they want to put their name on it. They design a cover for the book. They handle the marketing and the distribution. They collect all the money and pay you a royalty.
The self-publishers will print anything you give them - and print as many copies as you are willing to pay for. Then YOU have to do the advertising, the marketing, servicing the market, promoting the book etc.etc. - and that's not easy because most book stores will not carry self published books.
So - the choice is yours.
um...if you don't self-publish there ALL free in fact they pay YOU
