I've self published, but I think self publishing is a difficult way to sell a novel, largely because it is difficult to reach a broad audience when self publishing. It's hard to get self published novels into retail stores and the marketing is challenging. There certainly are some examples of people who have successfully self published novels, but it doesn't happen often. Most people I know who have been successful at self publishing do so with non fiction niche books.



Self publishing means you need to be both an author and publisher, so you need to be able to edit, do layout, market and distribute your book yourself. If you do decide to self publish stay away from the vanity presses such as Publish America.

Most advisers will tell you not to self-publish your book, citing the concept that "money flows toward the writer". However, as one who has actually self-published two novels, I don't necessarily subscribe to the previous statement.
