Author House is a vanity publisher and a definite scam. They've just lost a libel case with one of their authors.
If you want to self-publish, Lulu.com is one of the few honest ones. Personally, I'm not a fan of self-publishing, but it depends what you want to publish.
I have a lot of info about self-publishing on my blog, which might help you. Otherwise, you can check out publishers at Preditors %26amp; Editors (link below) to see whether they're kosher or not.

What is fake? Any of them that ask you for money, period. They are to pay you not the other way around.
I honestly suggest getting the latest version of the Writers Digest, find it on ebay fairly cheap. It is a huge book full of thousands of publishing houses that are into your genre of story.
Also, you can check the publishing houses of the books that you read and are inspired by and go to thier official websites.
Don't be fooled by online publishing that promises a lot, but give you an empty wallet when they are done.
Good luck!

Do you want to self-publish? In that case, you could try lulu.com. They're for real and thousands of people self-pub through them. You will have to do all your leg-work yourself though (publicity, selling through the internet or in person...). But if you don't want to go through editors and agents and all that, you don't have much choice really.
