I am about to write a book and I'm looking into various publishing companies to publish through. A friend of mine used Publishamerica a few years ago and was quite happy with it but, i was wondering if anyone on here had any other ones they would like to recommend? Can anyone recommend a good book publishing company?
Publish America and any other vanity press will be your worst nightmare. He's probably satisfied with PA because he doesn't know how real publishing works. Once he finds out then he'll be just as pissed off as many other former PA victims, er, clients. Companies like PA don't make money off selling your book, and that's not their goal. They make money off the authors who write those books. I'm sure your friend was asked for a list of family and friends when he signed up with PA. PA then sent those people requests asking that they buy your friend's book. That's not how real publishing work. PA should have also offered your friend "good" deals to get him to buy his own book. Real publishers don't do that either. Do you see anywhere in that scheme where PA is trying to sell your book to the public? No? Because they're not. If you're okay with buying tons of your over-priced book then go right ahead and sign on with PA, especially if you're okay with signing over publishing rights to your book for 7 years. Some people have also reported that PA has ripped them off by under-reporting royalties, but then again, you're not going to sell many books if you're only selling over the Internet, it's not being promoted and you're only hitting up family and friends to spend their hard earned money.
If you want to self-publish then use a company like lulu.com - it's MUCH cheaper in the end.
http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums has a whole section dedicated to the monstrosity called Publish America, so have your friend check it out. It's under the Writer Beware and Background Checks section.
Don't worry about publishing until you've completed your book. Saying you're going to write one is the easy part. Most people who attempt to write a book never finish, so don't become that statistic and don't put the cart before the horse. Can anyone recommend a good book publishing company?
"I am about to write a book..."
Stop right there. Until you've started writing and are in completion stages (read: edited second, third, fourth, and even fifth draft) then publishing should be the LAST thing on your mind. You're all talk until you get to writing and actually complete it. Out of 100 wannabe writers who say they are going to write a book at least 70 never start to begin, another 15 quit after a few weeks or months, 10 quit just before the end and the remainder do finish and maybe one lucky one out of that 100 will be published.
That said, NEVER go with PA. Type in "Publish America + scam" and you will come up with a lot of material AGAINST them. Just...dont.
Research The Writer's Market, Writer's Digest, and Absolute Write to familiarize yourself with the writing industry. While doing that, plant butt firmly in chair and WRITE. Talking about writing an MS and actually writing one are two different things. Don't talk. Do.
Good luck. Can anyone recommend a good book publishing company?
Publishing a book is never easy and writing is just part of the big picture. I suggest you finish writing your book first. You need to make sure that your book is polished to perfection. After all, your aim is to publish a book that not only sells, but will make people want to remember.
Once you will have finished writing your manuscript, you will still need to edit it, rewrite it and improve it. You want to make sure that your work is truly book-worthy. This way, you won't have too much a problem getting your book published.

Miese is right. Not everyone has the courage to face the publishing industry even if their literature is highly recommended for public consumption. Because you already have your materials, the next thing you might decide on doing is to find a publisher who will be your retailer, publisher, editor and distributor at the same time - which is of course not that easy to find.
When I meet an author with a great book concept, one who鈥檚 definitely the right person to write that book, right away I鈥檒l often encourage him or her to self-publish. This is because I know that an author is thoroughly invested in what they have to say. Your publisher can help you determine the genre if you like. And this is your book - no one should tell you what to do.
Good luck! :)
