Real publishing companies?

Ok, no matter where I seem to go, I'm always finding out a publishing company for books is a scam! I really want to get my story on the market, but I can't seem to find any reliable companies. Could someone please help me by listing a few in CA that are good? And preferably in the SF area? Thank you!Real publishing companies?
Okay, first, it doesn't matter where the publisher is located. Most of the major ones are located in New York or Boston. That's fine. You don't need one that's local to you.

Next: To find the legitimate publishers. Go into a real doors-and-windows physical bookstore. Find books on the shelves that are like yours. Those are the publishers you want. Scammers can't get books actually distributed. Real publishers can. That's what publishers do. They distribute books. Get the publishers' names and addresses from the copyright pages of those books you've found.

Get the publishers' guidelines. Follow them to the letter. That's all there is to it.

Remember Yog's Law: Money flows _toward_ the author. Any time someone asks you for money, for any reason, it's a scam.

Next place to look for information: Writer Beware. It's run by SFWA. http://www.sfwa.org/for-authors/writer-b鈥?/a> You know how you can tell they're the good guys? The bad guys have actually set up websites trying to attack them, launching personal attacks and character assassination.

You can also look at Preditors and Editors. http://pred-ed.com/ They'll help you steer clear of scams.Real publishing companies?
You don't need a publisher at this point. You need an agent.

First secure an agent. The agent will deal with publishers.

Good luck,

Preditors %26amp; Editors is the best place I know of for finding legit publishers.
