How do music publishing companies work?

my band are being offered a deal, but our guitarist wants to write other stuff with his other band, is it true that if he signs the deal he can only write for that specific label or is there a clause he can use to write stuff for another label? strange one i know, any help is much appreciated :-)How do music publishing companies work?
Unfortunately your guitarist will probably only be able to write for your label. This is especially true if you are a new band just signing your first deal. You may be able to work something out with the record company, the only way to find out is to talk with them directly. Some artists have a clause allowing them to write / play with other bands/interests/solo. The best option there is to have the other band sign with the same label. The the company will not feel as though it is being outed, by another publisher. How do music publishing companies work?
this answer is wrong.... a label does only has rights to an artist as a performer and not a writer which is why so many artists are making a living writing for other artists
