Why do some publishing companies forbid buyers from re-selling the books?

i bought a used book for agatha christie (they came to baghdad)

it's very old published in1974 by pan books but they say it's forbidden to re-sell the book why is that?

i feel a bit guiltyWhy do some publishing companies forbid buyers from re-selling the books?
They cannot forbid you, as a consumer, from selling the book at a yard sale, or buying it used. If it was an advance reader's copy, it is not supposed to be sold commercially as a new legitimate edition of the book. You have nothing to feel guilty about.
Don't worry about it.

The book might have been an advance reading copy sent to reviewers, or some sort of sample copy sent to a limited bunch.

They may have also put that in hoping to discourage used bookstores, so people would only buy new copies.

The statute of limitations has loooong expired! Why do some publishing companies forbid buyers from re-selling the books?
They want to make money and sell a copy of that book themselves.
Girls,

I never heard of that before. Secondhand bookstores do this all the time.
