How can one get started as a work-at-home proofreader for a publishing company?

I currently reside in Charleston, SC and am interested in working out of my home. I have been employed as an Executive Assistant for many years and have excellent punctuation and grammar skills and a keen eye for spelling errors. I would like some information and direction on how to proceed in contacting publishing companies, etc. in order to proofread manuscripts either electronically or hard copy. What does this position pay and how is it normally calculated? How can one get started as a work-at-home proofreader for a publishing company?

I am not sure about how to go about this exactly; however, you can maybe try to search freelance job sites. This may get your foot in the door for more permanent work. I think it'd be a little hard to do at home, unless you first get an in-office job and then that jobs gets moved to the home. BUT, I would suggest checking out some freelance jobs. Search in YAHOO for keyworks like: Freelance jobs, freelance work, freelance editor, etc. Good luck!
