Legitimate publishing companies in NY, NY?

My friend has just completed one of her own books, which she would like to publish soon. She's 13, and is serious about writing, even it might not be perfect.

Does anyone know of any legitimate publishing companies in New York? This would be my friends first book.. so it would also be taking a risk.

If she is serious about writing she should want it perfect before she even considers submitting it for publication. Publishing is a nasty business and not for the faint of heart.

I have been in the print/technical writing industry for over 20 years. Getting published is not easy at all. First of all in this country alone, 2 million manuscripts are written annually. Of that, only 1 - 2% are published by "traditional" publishing houses, and this for the most part by "established" author names.

You should explore books you can find in the library or book stores such as the "Writers Market" for listings of these publishing houses as well as how to contact them. Another good begining though, is to write stories and blogs on the internet to build up author name recognition. This is extremely important. Also, you can try getting a literay agent to work for you. But unfortunatey, there is no easy way.Legitimate publishing companies in NY, NY?
Pick up any book in your house. Look inside the first on second page, there you will find the name and address of the publisher. Take down that information and go online to find out what other genres they publish and whether or not they are accepting unsolicited manuscripts (it isn't a book until it is bound).

Some authors will list their agents and publishers on their website so try to find your favorite author websites and go from there.

I wholeheartedly support your friend's desire to be published however having gone through the process myself I suggest she make sure a parent helps her along. All of the youth authors out today had the support of their family. Because once an agent or publisher reads the work unless the minor is emancipated the parents will become her manager or spokesperson. The author of Eragon spent a year writing his book then a year editing his book with the help of his parents and then they self-published the novel with their own finances before going on a national promotional tour selling the book and doing signings in different schools. He was seventeen before a publisher paid any attention to the book and signed him to a contract that means it was out for a year before he garnered attention and even then the book was edited by a professional to bring it closer to industry and market acceptability.

Understand that your friend's competition in the young adult market isn't other 13 year olds but grown ups with more experience in life and in marketing and most importantly in writing.
