how do i get them to notice me and accept my book? do i need a literary agent? How do you go about publishing a book? all the publishing companies i know of don't accept unsolicited work.?
If you can get an agent they will open doors for you that would otherwise be closed. However, getting an agent is almost as hard as getting a publisher. So many writers want an agent they can be (and are) very picky about who they will accept as a client. Most new authors pursue a duel approach to marketing their first novel. They submit it to agents in the hope someone will be intrigued and pick them up. They also submit it to publishers in the hope that a publisher will buy it and publish their work. If a publisher does become interested most agents will be willing to represent the writer. Before you sign a contract you rally do need an agent because they will protect your interests in the deal.

To get started you need to get a copy of the Novel %26amp; Short Story Writer's Market. It has a list of thousands of publisher (many of which will accept unsolicited manuscripts). It also lists a number of agents you can approach. There is a (short) chapter that will explain in detail how to prepare and submit your work. It is a truly valuable resource.

Marketing your novel is a long, tedious process. Don't get discouraged, all writers have to face this same problem. It is part of the writing process. To distract yourself while waiting for an answer to your submission you should start writing your next novel. Good luck, and hang in there....
I have written a few books and struggled with the same issues. What you may have to do is have it published yourself. There are numerous "self publication" websites out there that range in fees from a few hundred bucks to over 1K. Piers Anthony (author) has a great page on his website that lists tons of self-publication sites with reviews written by him on the ones he has had the time to investigate.

Once you get it published that at least gives you something to work with on your next book and quest to attract larger publicists. How do you go about publishing a book? all the publishing companies i know of don't accept unsolicited work.?
If you want to be published by a publisher who doesn't accept unsolicited manuscripts (most or all of the major ones), then yes, you need a literary agent. The agent sifts through the thousands of manuscripts that authors send him every year and sends to publishers the ten or so that he thinks will sell. (Big agencies send more manuscripts to publishers, but they receive more from authors, so it balances out.)

Most countries have a book, updated annually, that lists all the reputable agencies. The book is called Writers' Market or something similar. If you're in the USA, there's also a website you can try, agentquery.com. There are a lot of disreputable, or scam, agencies who will just milk you for as much money as they can and give you nothing in return. An agency that isn't in Writers' Market and/or agentquery.com isn't necessarily a scam, but it's a fairly safe bet.

Smaller publishers don't (always) require you to have an agent, though this isn't always out of choice on their part. A smaller publisher usually means smaller sales, and there comes a point where the agent thinks his likely profit isn't worth the amount of effort he'll have to put in to persuade the publisher to accept the book, so he doesn't bother trying. Writers' Market lists publishers as well, and should tell you whether they accept unsolicited manuscripts. If you can't work it out from the listing in the book, check the publisher's website.
Self-publishing is hard and time/money consuming. You need to find a literary aegnt who represents work like yours...actually, you need to find a few hundred of them. Write out a killer query letter and plot synopsis and send these agents ONLY AND EXACTLY what they ask for on their websites. Maybe someone will like your idea. How do you go about publishing a book? all the publishing companies i know of don't accept unsolicited work.?
1) Get an agent. A useful agent has sold books that you've heard of. You never, ever, pay a literary agent anything up front. They make 100% of their income from a percentage of what they earn for you.

2) Expand your knowledge of publishing companies. There are a ton of small presses and regional presses that don't require an agent (although getting an agent is still a great idea). Check http://www.duotrope.com

3) If you self-publish, be aware that you'll probably sell 75-150 copies, and that'll be if you work your tail off on promoting them. You'll sell most (if not all) to people you already know by name.

4) If you pay a publisher, you're a sucker.
I suggest that you buy this book.
