What is one of the best publishing companies? ?

Or what is a good publisher that will give me more of a chance at getting published? I also heard somethig about it costing to get a book published, is that true? What is one of the best publishing companies? ?
It is never true that you have to pay to be published, unless you want to go the Vanity Press route. (And if you go that way, you'll sell 75-150 copies max, and never make back your "investment.") Again, if anyone asks you for money to publish, they're making their money from *you*, not from selling books to the public.

Your chances of being published depend on how well you can write. This is a game of skill, not a game of chance.

Which is the best publisher depends on what you've written.

Go into a bookstore. Find books similar to yours. See who published them. Get their guidelines and follow those guidelines to the letter. If they say you need to submit via an agent, get an agent. Agents don't cost you anything either. Real agents make their money from a percentage of what you get when they sell your book.

A useful agent has sold books that you've heard of.

Don't go with a bad publisher in order to "get my book out there." The only thing worse than being unpublished is being badly published. There have been thousands of start-up publishers that crashed and burned within a year of their founding, taking their authors' books with them when they went. And if you go with PublishAmerica, not only will you have a horrible time, not only will you sell maybe 75-150 copies (that you had to buy yourself to try to peddle out of the trunk of your car), but everyone will laugh at you.

If a publisher can't get physical copies of their books actually on the shelves of the bookstore closest to you, you aren't interested in talking to them.

And keep writing books. If your most recent doesn't sell, try again with a new, different, better book. What is one of the best publishing companies? ?
There are a tiny number of publishers who accept unsolicited manuscripts (those that don't go through a literary agent), so getting an agent first is a really good idea.

Finish writing your book (if it is not already finished).

Type it in proper manuscript form (http://www.neverend.com/msforamt.htm has the details on what is needed).

Edit it many, many times to make it as good as it can be. Put it in a drawer, and don't even think about it, for a month or two, then take it out and do more editing. Don't try to say "It's perfect. It does not need editing." Yes, it does.

Get it proofread by someone who knows what they are doing (do not rely just on spellcheck).

When your book is edited and polished, come back here and ask about how to get an agent. You can also use the search-bar at the top of this page and ask. It's a popular question.

If you self-publish, you will pay up to a couple of thousand dollars, depending on the publisher. Also, marketing of the book, and getting it into bookstores, is totally up to you. If you go the "regular" route of getting an agent who will sell your book to a publisher, then the entire process is FREE.What is one of the best publishing companies? ?
No it isn't true, anyone that charges you to get published I would stay far away from. Most traditional publishers only accepted agented submissions, look through a copy of Writers Market which will have a list of publishers.
